Pulitzer Arts Foundation | Dialogues & Conversations Opening Reception

This year the Pulitzer Arts Foundation celebrates its 25th anniversary by presenting an exceptionally personal exhibition organized by its founder and board chair, Emily Rauh Pulitzer. Dialogues & Conversations draws in large part from Mrs. Pulitzer’s own art collection, assembled over many decades with her late husband, Joseph Pulitzer, Jr., and the permanent collections of the Harvard Art Museums and Saint Louis Art Museum, where she began her curatorial career. This milestone project assembles approximately 70 sculptures, drawings, paintings, and photographs—by artists ranging from Edgar Degas and Medardo Rosso to Alberto Giacometti and Doris Salcedo—to examine the nature of artistic influences and exchanges, both writ large in art history and in one person’s life. Dialogues & Conversations sheds light on Mrs. Pulitzer’s passionate interest in the history of drawing and development of sculpture in modern and contemporary art, the latter sparked in part by her extended dialogues over decades with artists like Dan Flavin, Ellsworth Kelly, and Richard Serra. These many influences and ideas are examined within the context of the interdisciplinary approach of the Pulitzer Arts Foundation.

This exhibition is organized by Emily Rauh Pulitzer, Founder and Board Chair at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, with Molly Moog, Curatorial Associate.

Current Pulitzer Exhibition | Sarah Crowner: Around Orange | Now – Feb 4, 2024

Hosted by Pulitzer Arts Foundation.

Bold abstraction and intense color are signatures of the New York-based painter Sarah Crowner (b. 1974), who brings these elements to the Pulitzer this fall. In three new site-specific artworks, Crowner pays homage to the architecture of the Pulitzer’s Tadao Ando building and the vision of Ellsworth Kelly, whose monumental wall sculpture, Blue Black, is on permanent view in the Pulitzer’s main gallery.

Current Pulitzer Exhibition | Urban Archaeology: Lost Buildings of St. Louis | Now – Feb 4, 2024

Hosted by Pulitzer Arts Foundation.

Drawn from the rich collection of the National Building Arts Center (NBAC), Urban Archaeology brings together salvaged architectural elements from landmark buildings, residential homes, and neighborhood institutions built in St. Louis between 1840 and 1950. The artifacts on display represent important histories of material innovation, labor, and the everyday lives of the people who inhabit the city. The exhibition sheds light on the city’s history, revealing complicated legacies of power, wealth, and neglect that shape our experience of the built environment and daily life. By studying St. Louis’s architectural past, Urban Archeology encourages us to imagine new ways of building, keeping, knowing, and inhabiting places.
